Previewing Prince Albert’s World Championship Fastball

Jun 22, 2015 | 7:33 AM

International men’s fastball is returning to Prime Minister’s Park in Prince Albert.

Team Canada will host Venezuela in a tune-up for both before competing in the World Championships at the end of the month in Saskatoon.

Organizer Kalen Kovitch said Tuesday’s doubleheader is a rare opportunity for local fastball fans.

“This is the highest level of ball, not just in our country, but in the world.” said Kovitch. “This tournament that’s coming to Saskatoon at the end of the month is the best ball players in the world. It’s an event that doesn’t come to North America very often – it’s an event that doesn’t come to Canada all that often – so the chance to see these ball games are few and far between.”

Team Canada has undergone a transformation. Kovitch said it’s a much younger squad then in recent world championships. It’s a response to a youth movement from the top teams around the world.

“They’ve (Team Canada) gotten younger, which is something they had to remedy after 2009 and even after 2011 and 2013, because the rest of the countries in the world realized getting younger and faster was the key to success.”

Team Canada’s pitching staff includes Saskatoon’s Devon McCullough and Kovitch said to watch out for a Newfoundland contingent to provide pop from the plate.

“They come from a club team in Newfoundland that has won the senior men’s national title three years in a row so there will be some good hitters there, Steven Mulally, Jason Hill, guys like that, so there are some very good players on Team Canada’s roster.”

Prince Albert fastball officials hope a big turnout at this doubleheader will help their bid for the 2018 Junior Men’s World Championships and aid in continuing to grow a sport that is gaining in local popularity.

“The game continues to grow in our community.” said Kovitch.” “Coming out to the diamond for these types of events is just the start of fostering that popularity and interest in the game. And we are looking to host the 2018 Junior Men’s World championships, so this is kind of a sampling we could see for almost a month in our city come 2018.”

On Tuesday, an autograph session is being held from 4:30 to 5 p.m. with the first game of the twin bill set for 6 p.m. on Diamond 1. The nightcap gets underway at 8:30 p.m. Admission is $10, and is free for children under 13.
