Ragged Ass Barbers sorry for not giving Regina woman haircut
Regina’s Ragged Ass Barbers has apologized to Evie Ruddy for refusing to give her a haircut.
In August 2014, Ruddy filed a human rights complaint against the barber shop.
In a statement issued on Tuesday from the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, the owner, Craig Zamonsky, apologized and agreed she was wrongfully denied service because of her gender. The two parties agreed to a “mutually amenable mediated settlement.”
“She should not have been turned away when she contacted the barbershop to inquire about getting a haircut,” said Zamonsky in the release. “It is and will be our policy to provide services to anyone who wants a traditional men’s haircut. Ragged Ass Barbers will do its best to continue to meet the needs of all of its customers within the scope of services we provide.”
Ruddy has accepted the apology, calling it “heartfelt and genuine.”
“It was a difficult time for me and my friends and family to experience what it is like to face discrimination and to voice it,” she said in the same release. “Craig, as the owner of Ragged Ass Barbers, should be respected for this acknowledgement and for participating in an amicable solution process.”
David Arnot, chief commissioner of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, commended both parties for their perseverance while being subjected to “considerable public criticism.”
