Red River Roping and Riding Rodeo weekend finally here

Jun 15, 2015 | 5:41 PM

The Red River Roping and Riding Arena’s KCRA Rodeo kicks off this weekend.

LeeAnn Mette, chairperson for the rodeo, said they have a full weekend of events running from Friday until Sunday.

On Friday night the barrel racing jackpot will take place at 7 p.m. with entries happening at 6 p.m.

Mette said the barrel racing will be duel sanctioned with the Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association and the Red River Roping Arena Barrel Racing Jackpot, which means anyone can enter all the way from pee-wee, to juniors to adults.

On Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. will be a full fledge rodeo performance with all the rough stock events and timed events a rodeo would have.

“The rodeo performance will feature a wide variety of events including bareback riding, tie down roping, saddle broncs, steer wrestling, junior steer riding, ladies breakaway roping, team roping, pee-wee barrel racing, peewee team roping, ladies and junior barrel racing,” Mette said.

She said the event will also feature bull riding, lots of food concessions and a beer garden.

“In addition to that after the rodeos done we’re having a team roping jackpot Saturday night at 6 p.m., entries start at 4:45 p.m., and anybody can enter that as well.”

On Saturday night there is a family rodeo dance featuring Grid Road.

“The dance starts at 9 p.m. at the indoor arena. We’ve set it aside to have the dance in there, so there will be a dance floor set up just like our usual arena dances.”

Sunday at 1 p.m. there will be another rodeo performance.

Mette said the Red River Roping and Riding Arena is trying to make the event family affordable so ticket prices will be reasonable.

Kids under 10 are free, kids aged 10 to 16 are $10 a day or $15 for the whole weekend and for adults it’s $15 a day or $25 for the whole weekend.

Anyone looking for information can call Mette at 306-961-6089 or through their Facebook page.

“I got the unofficial draw from our rodeo secretary and we have over 260 entries into this rodeo already, it’s wonderful. We’ve got people from all over Alberta and Saskatchewan that are coming for the events.”

They also have all ages competing.

“It’s a great family event. It’s a great opportunity to have a Father’s Day weekend to bring your dad out and enjoy a day outside and hopefully Mother Nature cooperates.”

To get to the rodeo travel on Highway #2 north, turn right at the Redwing turn off and continue past the tracks. The Red River Roping and Riding Arena will be on the right.
