Old fuel tank to be dug up at Hafford Special Care Centre

Jun 13, 2015 | 8:20 AM

The Hafford Special Care Centre will be having some of its grounds dug up.

The Prince Albert Parkland Health Region said there is an old fuel tank underground that needs to be taken out.

Doug Dahl, communications officer, said they’ve known about the fuel tank for a while, but an auditor recently told them it’s now time to have it removed.

“What we will be doing is doing some testing of the soil to determine if there’s been any leakage and any soil remediation required.  If that is [the case] that will change the cost,” Dahl said.

However, at this point there are no safety concerns, he said, and the soil testing will take place “soon.” Dahl said they hope to get the test completed this month, so the removal of the fuel tank can take place over the summer.

“Until the soil testing is done we don’t have any reason to believe that there’s a concern at the moment, but the soil testing will determine.  It [the results] will also influence how you go about removing the tanks,” he said.

As for the origins of the tank, Dahl really couldn’t say with certainty what it was initially used for.

“I’m not sure if it was a fuel tank for the facility, people here aren’t really sure,” he said.  “It might have been related to one time there was a hospital there, so maybe that’s where they kept fuel for a generator.”
