P.A. new home permit numbers buck national trend

Jun 9, 2015 | 11:38 AM

Fewer new single-family home permits have been issued in May over the same time last year in Prince Albert, going against a national trend of increases.

According to numbers from Statistics Canada released earlier this week, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador made gains on this front. Nationally, residential permits were on the rise for a third month in a row.

In Prince Albert, there were 11 residential single-family unit permits applied for in May 2014, at a value of just more than $3 million. That’s in contrast to the three single-family unit permits issued this past May, at a value of $1.159 million.

The declines in Prince Albert tell a similar tale where permits for home renovations are concerned.

In May 2014, there were 16 permits issued for alterations, additions, repairs and garages, at a value of $317,000. This past May, that number was halved, with eight permits issued at a value of $160,000.

Year-to-date, the overall numbers paint a picture of an overall downward trend in single-family home permits issued. Last year, from January to May, 50 permits were issued, but year-to-date in 2015, 38 permits were issued.
