Howe is taking part in a clinical trial in Mexico that is using stem cells for treatment following a stroke. He had a serious stroke last October and the first stem cell treatment following that helped him regain his strength and mobility.

Howe was doing so well, he even made a public appearance in February at Saskatoon’s Kinsmen Sports Celebrity Dinner. Among hockey greats including Wayne Gretzky, Bobby and Brett Hull, Howe was overcome with emotion from the outpouring of support. Saskatoon Mayor Don Atchison presented Howe with the sign that will go above the newly renamed Gordie Howe Arena.

Once he finishes this round of treatment, Howe will return to Michigan before moving to an Ohio nursing home that specializes in dementia care.
