He’s been sharing his love of music in Prince Albert since he came to the city in 1965.

And on June 7, Bob Gibson received Prince Albert’s Award of Merit for his contributions to education and music in the city.

Gibson said it’s very nice to be recognized in music because “we see so much recognition of people with sports teams,” he said. “It’s nice to have a change.”

He said he had no idea he was going to be receiving the award until the day he got it.

“I’ve spent my life working with instrumental music bands …. I’ve been here since ’65 and I came specifically [from England] to teach band here and I’ve been here ever since.”

And he said that wasn’t even his initial plan but he got settled into what he was doing and the rest is history.

He initially came to teach the Lions Club band and moved on to teach music in a number of Prince Albert schools.

“In the meantime I also acquired some other work with groups in town. I had the Captones, a male choir, the Sweet Adelines chorus for a few years, I had a men’s choir for a few years and right now as far as choral work I have a mix choir made up of people from all walks of life from in and around Prince Albert,” Gibson said.

He said it’s meant a lot to share his love of music with everyone in Prince Albert because “that’s what music is all about,” Gibson said.

“It’s a thing that reaches deep down inside you, it’s not just a physical thing, that’s not what it’s all about. And to see someone get that satisfaction and communicate it with you as a group, that’s what it’s all about, as the saying goes.”

Gibson continues to enjoy retirement life and continues to work with choirs around the city.
