Outdoor farmer’s market opens in P.A.

May 16, 2015 | 8:37 AM

May long weekend is featuring the first outdoor farmer’s market of the season in Prince Albert.

The farmer’s market will run on Saturdays and Wednesdays throughout the summer from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.

Saturday’s markets will be held in the parking lot of City Hall.

Bob Gill, executive director of the Prince Albert Downtown Business Improvement District (PADBID), said they are big supporters of the farmers market.

“We know it’s such a great event for downtown especially once they switch over to Central Ave … a lot of the vehicles will stop and walk, then branch out to other stores, [people] walk in and take a look at some of the stores. Businesses report their sales increase on the Wednesdays, so it definitely helps.”

The farmers market on Wednesdays will be held at Memorial Square until July 1, when it will then move onto Central Avenue for the remainder of the season.

“After July 1 then we get more venders with the vegetables and that coming. For the first while it’s some of the crafts, bakers, meats, honey [and] things like that but we don’t really get the full influx of vegetables until somewhere around [July 1]. That’s when we’ll move out to Central cause then we start getting two to three times the amount of venders,” Gil said.

He said they have quite a few new venders already for this year and he expects about a dozen venders at the first farmers market.

After July 1 he expects to see between 30 to 40 venders.

PADBID recently held a board meeting on May 12 to discuss upcoming events and projects, like the Street Fair which will be held next month.

“We have a couple of projects on the go.  We’re going to be going in conjunction with the City for repainting the water fountains and the two historical lights in front of the Arts Centre, we’re going to assist them with funding for that,” Gill explained.

“The old Katie’s Kloset beside us, we’re working with the property owner for revitalizing that [with some] painting in the corners up top.”

Gill said those will be some of the projects they will focusing on over the summer.

PADBID is also getting a new logo.
