Joint service for Carrot River teens killed in crash

May 7, 2015 | 7:43 AM

Three teenage boys killed in a car crash last weekend near Spalding will be laid to rest Monday in their home town of Carrot River.

Justin Gaja, 14, Kristian Skalicky, 15, and Carter Stevenson, 17, were killed more than a week ago on Highway 6. They were stopped behind a Dodge truck at a construction zone when their Cavalier was hit from behind my a semi. The Cavalier then hit the Dodge, which hit a 21-year-old man working as the flagperson. He remains in hospital in serious condition.

The funeral on Monday will be followed by a public statement from the family and the town’s mayor Bob Gagne. Over the weekend the Town issued a release stating it’s communicated with the parents of the young men.

That statement firmly requested media to not attend the service and to respect the family’s privacy prior to that.

MLA for Carrot River Valley Fred Bradshaw choked up several times while making an emotional statement in the Legislature on Wednesday.

“Mr.Speaker, I’ve made quite a few member statements over the years, but today is the hardest one … I’ve ever made.”

The boys played highschool football together for the Carrot River Junior and Senior Wildcats. Kristian’s father, Brad Skalicky told News Talk Radio the boys were friends and were returning home from a football camp.

Choking back the tears Bradshaw said the loss has shaken the tight knit community.

“As you can imagine, in a small rural setting where everyone knows everyone, this tragedy has touched so many lives.

“I would like to ask everyone in this assembly to give Carrot River and the families of these young boys in their thoughts minds and prayers at this time of incredible hurt.”

The joint service for the boys will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Carrot River Community Centre.  The town office will be closed for the funeral.
