Carlton’s ‘dream team’ ready for regionals

May 1, 2015 | 4:42 PM

Cory Sawchuck and Alex Zhou are a grade 12 Senior Boy’s Doubles Badminton Team for the Carlton Crusaders.

They won gold on April 26 at districts, beating the opposing team in straight sets 21-16 and 21-5 to advance to regionals.

Sawchuck and Zhou’s friendship off the court helped them with their chemistry once they started playing together.

“We played together last year during tryouts for senior badminton. We knew we had chemistry when we played our first game, we beat the team so bad and we covered each other really well. Being friends before we became a team helped us cooperate, deal with our weaknesses and have fun,” Cory said.

Although they won gold in districts they want to keep improving on the court.

“We need to improve on our mental game by staying in the moment and staying focused even if we are losing really bad or winning really bad, but not to stop trying until the game is over,” said Cory.

Through their years of badminton they have been impacted by a lot of people but a few of them stand out.

“We had great coaches named Tony De Padua and Arnold Cabilao from the Price Albert and District Badminton Club, who helped refine our play style and take our game to the next level. Rahul Parekh also had an impact on us who helped us train our individual games. Teachers like Mills, Meyers and Gorgenson also helped us grow our game by setting up games against the teachers,” said Alex.

Going into regionals they would like to improve on their results from last year where they finished third, failing to secure a top two seed and advance.

“Our goal for regionals is too obviously to advance, but we’d also like to secure the first seed for the provincial tournament,” Alex said.

The regional tournament will be held in Carrot River on May 2.
