Merle Lacert honoured on last day

Apr 30, 2015 | 4:02 PM

It’s a sign of a job well done by the CEO of the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce, Merle Lacert.

On Thursday, Richard Ahenakew, general manager of the Northern Lights Casino, alongside his executive assistant Sherry Arsenault and senior operations manager Angela Isbister-Bear, presented Lacert with a Star Blanket on his last day.

With the blanket wrapped around him, Lacert said he felt he didn’t deserve the high honour.

But Ahenakew felt differently.

“I know Merle had mentioned he feels he’s not worthy because he knows the tradition and the meaning behind the Star Blanket and that but we have a little bit of a different view,” he said.  “Not only are the Chamber managers in our community a bridge between business and government, but they also bring so many other groups together through work that they do.”

Ahenakew said Lacert and the chamber have worked with the Northern Lights Casino for a number of years and it has been a really good experience.

“Merle is a very smart and intelligent young man.”

Lacert shared those sentiments about Ahenakew and the casino.

“[Ahenakew is] one of our most engaged members in our communities,” Lacert said.  “The support has been incredible and has meant a lot to me and has made a big change for myself and also has meant a lot for the chamber.”

Lacert is taking on a job with a new business in Prince Albert—a company called Heat Smart, which specializes in alternative energy projects.

Larry Fladager will be taking over the position with the chamber.
