UPDATE: Suspicious death at Northwoods Inn and Suites declared homicide

Apr 20, 2015 | 7:27 AM

Saskatoon police have declared the suspicious death of a 44-year-old man early Saturday morning as the city’s fifth homicide of 2015.

The man was found badly injured in the parking lot of the Northwoods Inn and Suites at the corner of Idylwyld Drive and 26ht Street. He was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:02 a.m.

Police have not released the name of the victim but friends and family on social media are identifying him as Billy Johnston. His Facebook shows he was living in Saskatoon.

Police say it looks like an altercation started inside one of the motel rooms and spilled out into the parking lot.

Although police don’t know the exact nature of the relationship between Johnston and his attacker, they don’t think it was a random act.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday at 1 p.m. in Edmonton, Alta. Police have not released the cause of Johnston’s injuries. Members of the Saskatoon Police Major Crime and Forensics Units are investigating.

Yellow police tape continues to block the front of the Northwoods Inn and Suites’ parking lot as police investigate.

On Saturday, more than half a dozen police cruisers surrounded the hotel and had one northbound Idylwyld Drive lane blocked off between 25th and 27th Streets.
