Nipawin college leading way in solar power

Apr 20, 2015 | 12:20 PM

A school in Nipawin is leading the way in Saskatchewan when it comes to sustainable resources.

Nipawin Bible College is now the first college in the country to be completely powered by solar energy.

The college installed 7,140 square feet of solar panels in 2014, which became the largest solar array in Saskatchewan and one of the largest in Western Canada.

The array pumps out 100 kilowatts of energy.

The college hopes to be at net zero with this new array which will mean all of the campus facilities will be entirely powered by the solar panels.

These facilities include the auditorium, the education centre, the student centre, food services building, the dormitories, maintenance shop and street lights.

Ryan Jansen is the project engineer, who is also an alumnus and college board member with Nipawin Bible College.

He is the operator of Good Steward Solutions and installs solar arrays across Saskatchewan.

The college currently has an average attendance of 55 students per year.
