P.A’s Fauchoux has been money for Mustangs

MELFORT—The Melfort Mustangs are one win away from a Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League championship and Prince Albert’s Adam Fauchoux is a big reason why.

Fauchoux has been a goal-scoring giant this postseason with 14 goals in 13 playoff games—three more than any other SJHL player. He also has a league leading 23 playoff points.

Five of his goals have come in a most important time, the SJHL Canalta Cup final series against the Notre Dame Hounds. Fauchoux’s first period goal on Wednesday turned out to be the game winner as the Mustangs posted 4-1 win in Melfort to take a commanding 3-0 final series lead.

If you ask Fauchoux how he’s managed to score more than a goal per game during the most difficult time of the year to score, he’ll tell you he’s feeling sure of himself on a team that’s feeling sure of themselves.

The Mustangs came into the playoffs as the top-ranked team in the league with a 39-8-3 regular season record, and have yet to lose a playoff game in regulation with an 11-0-2 record.

“It’s just come with a lot of confidence,” said Fauchoux, who played two seasons with the Mintos from 2010-2012. “The team had a lot of confidence coming into the playoffs, and with confidence comes success and with success comes even more confidence.

“It’s a vicious cycle that works out in our favour.”

With all the attention Fauchoux has received for his offensive explosion, Mustangs head coach Trevor Blevins was very quick to note Fauchoux’s all-around game. If anything, Blevins seems more impressed with Fauchoux’s defensive presence.

“He’s great offensively, but his defensive play is exceptional,” said Blevins. “I’ve said this before, when you talk about a 200-foot player, I’d say Adam Fauchoux fits right in.

“He does everything well and he’s got his success from how hard he’s worked here, on and off the ice.”

Fauchoux is one of nine Mintos alumni on the team, one of them is his linemate Regan Wilton. Luc Lemire, Justin Boyer, Eric Young and Bryton Serafini are on the list, as well as 2014 Telus Cup winners Dakota Boutin, Teal Sobkowicz and Braxx George.

Oddly enough, Blevins is a former coach of one of the Mintos fiercest rivals, the Tisdale Trojans.

“It’s nice to play with a lot of Minto people here, especially when we have a Trojans coach here, it’s nice to have fun with him,” said Fauchoux. “We have fun during practices and that with the rivalry.”

Summary

The Mustangs stormed out of the gates with a pair of goals in the opening 3:12, with a point blast from Jay Aasen and a wrist shot from Fauchoux.

Travis Mayan, the reigning SJHL Most Valuable Player, made it 3-0 Mustangs after finishing off a gorgeous tic-tac-toe play with Tristan Frei.

Hounds forward Trevor Cummings got the visitors on the board as his rebound effort trickled past Mustangs goalie Richard Palmer. Former Mintos captain Teal Sobkowicz scored an empty net goal, beating everybody to a loose puck after the Mustangs cleared their zone.

Game 4 in Wilcox

The Mustangs can seal their SJHL championship Thursday in Wilcox. Although Blevins was happy with the result, he said his club will need to play even better when they take on the Hounds on their home ice, where they’ve been tough to play on.

When asked what it would mean to take home the SJHL championship, a large smile started to creep onto Blevins face, before he abruptly stopped and went back into coach mode.

“Well, I won’t worry about that until the final buzzer,” said Blevins. “It would be huge for this community and for our organization.

“There’s a lot of working people that are involved in this and we’re going to try our best.”
