P.A. students head to Moose Jaw for skills competition

Apr 16, 2015 | 6:33 AM

Students from across the province will be meeting to compete head-to-head in the 17th Annual Saskatchewan Provincial Skills Competition.

The event will see 440 students and apprentices from secondary and post-secondary institutions across the province head to Moose Jaw on April 16 and 17, with some events being hosted in Saskatoon and Regina due to facility accessibility. More than 30 students from Prince Albert will be taking part, representing three local schools.

What’s described as an Olympic-style competition allows students to show off their skills in a wide range of trade and technology.

Gold medal winners in the competition will move on to face competitors from across the country in the Skills Canada National competition, which will be held in Saskatoon on May 2015.

“Our goal is to showcase to Saskatchewan’s prospective employers the skill levels of our future work force in the skilled trades and technology areas, in an effort to help alleviate the labour shortage in our province,” said Al Gabert, executive director for Skills Canada Saskatchewan. “The competition demonstrates the vast number of career opportunities available to people interested in pursuing a career in a trades or technology field. We promote excellence and safety in everything we do.”

During this provincial competition, events will be held at Saskatchewan Polytechnic, both at the Moose Jaw and Regina Campus, as well as A.E. Peacock High School, Central High School and Sask. Pipefitters Joint Training Board in Regina.
