P.A. Kings 2-0 after first day of Senator’s Cup; complete Day One wrap

The first day of the first ever Senator’s Cup Aboriginal Full Contact Hockey Tournament wrapped up Friday at the Art Hauser Centre. We have all the details you need from all the opening day games.

The hometown P.A. Kings won both of their games to advance to the A quarterfinals, with Prince Albert defenceman Dylan Yeo registering three goals and six points in the opening two games.

P.A. Kings 7 Red Army 0

The P.A. Kings opened the tournament by beating the Red Army. They had a 7-0 lead after the first period, and won the match as per the mercy rule.

The Kings were led by their professionals on the team as Dylan Yeo (Straubing Tigers, DEL, seven years in AHL/ECHL) led the way with two goals and two assists for the Kings. Colton Yellow Horn (Asia, Austria, ECHL, CHL) had two goals and a helper. Jon ‘Nasty’ Mirasty (Quebec, Russia, AHL, ECHL, CHL, UHL) had a goal and three helpers while Wacey Rabbit (AHL, Norway, Austria) had three assists.

Former Prince Albert Minto Jason Duret had a goal. Riley Currie had a goal and Josh Roach had three assists.

P.A Kings 3 Sandy Lake 1

The P.A. Kings had more of a test in their second game and passed it by beating the Ahtahkakoop Chiefs from Sandy Lake 3-1. However, the Chiefs had the early advantage as former Prince Albert Minto Adam Osczevski gave the Chiefs an early 1-0 lead. Osczevski was playing against two of his Minto teammates in the Duret brothers, Jason and Ryan on the Kings.

But the Kings were able to get the last three goals of the game, with Dylan Yeo tying the game and Colton Yellow Horn getting a pair for the win. Yeo had a goal an assist, giving him six points in his first two games.

The Kings will play the Patuanak Pats from English River in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre.

English River 4 Athabasca Ice 1

The Patuanak Pats from English River won their lone Friday game of the tournament, beating the Athabasca Ice 4-1 Friday night.

Former Prince Albert Raiders forward Craig McCallum had primary assists on the first three Pats goals, two of them scored by Trent Campbell. Shaq Merasty and Darren Reid had the other Pats’ goals.

Myles Stevens had the lone Ice goal, with an assist by former Raider T.J. Constant.

Beardy’s Blackhawks 4 CIBN Northern Jets 1

The Beardy’s Blackhawks scored four unanswered goals to beat the CIBN Northern Jets 4-1.

Jets’ forward Robin Yew opened the scoring, before Beardy’s defenceman and Moose Jaw Warrior Dustin Perillat tied the game for the Blackhawks heading into the second half.

Harris Cameron Jr. gave Beardy’s a 2-1 lead early in the second half.

The Blackhawks got to 3-1 anyways with a late goal from Kailum Gervais, a three-year player with the SJHL’s Yorkton Terriers. Raymond Cameron scored on the empty net to seal the deal.

CIBN Northern Jets 7 Norway House Bruins 0

The Northern Jets won by default as the Bruins’ forfeited the opening game.

La Ronge 89ers 7 James Smith Storm 0

The La Ronge 89ers earned a 7-0 mercy win early in the second period as they stomped on the James Smith Storm.

The 89ers led 5-0 in the first before adding a quick deuce in the second. Although they had seven goals, Colton Roberts was the only 89er to have a multi-goal game with a pair.

Looking ahead

Games start as early as 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Games consist of two, 25-minute halves with running time.

The two A bracket games are the 2:15 p.m. game against the Kings and Pats and the 3:30 p.m. matchup between the La Ronge 89ers and the Beardy’s Blackhawks. The Senators Honouring Ceremony will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The tournament will also run on Sunday, with the championship final slated for 3 p.m.
