1-day Maple Leafs contract for Beardy’s boy

Just as Cinderella comes out in theatres, a Beardy’s and Okemasis First Nation boy is learning for himself that dreams really do come true.

On Thursday Garrett Gamble Jr., or as he is commonly referred to—G-man, was surprised to learn his wish is coming true to be a member of his favourite hockey team, the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Gamble has a rare disease known as Murquio Syndrome, which has kept him in a wheelchair. His family applied him to the Children’s Wish Foundation two years ago.

In front of his school and family, a representative from the Leafs told the 11-year-old boy he will be flown to Toronto, through the Children’s Wish Foundation, to sign a one-day contract with the Leafs. He will be spending the day with the team Saturday and drop the puck at the game against the Ottawa Senators.

“It was a great, great day,” he said. “He’s a really calm and cool, collected kind of guy. So he was really jittery on the inside, but we could tell he was excited, but on the outside he was just looking cool as a cucumber and really happy to, I think, to be recognized like that,” said Band Councillor Kevin Seesequasis who was at Thursday’s announcement.

Gamble is a huge fan of the Leafs, probably the biggest in his community, according to Seesequasis.

“He’s a good kid who likes to game out, likes to go to school, doesn’t have a lot of worries in the world, obviously he’s got physical disabilities, but doesn’t let that hinder him. He’s outgoing, he’s in the community, says hi to everybody, fists pumps—that’s what he likes to do, he likes to fist pump everybody,” he said.

Right after Thursday’s announcement Gamble and his family jumped into a limousine and headed to the airport.

For Seesequasis, it’s a proud moment to see the Children’s Wish Foundation, alongside the Toronto Maple Leafs, do this for a member of his community.

“Obviously G-man has a physical disability that hinders his ability to play hockey. He eats, sleeps and breathes hockey, so it’s great to see them partner to make this wish come true,” he said.

To make the trip even more special the Band presented Gamble with a cheque.

Seesequasis said many people in the community will be hosting parties to watch the game Saturday and see Gamble drop the puck.
