Benefit set to help fire victims recover after loss

Mar 26, 2015 | 7:07 AM

The goal of a fundraiser Friday night in Prince Albert is to help a man and his son get a fresh start following a tragic fire in December.

The house fire on the Ahtakakoop Cree Nation, Dec. 29th, 2014, claimed the life of Teegan Ahenakew, 10, and his grandmother Donna Kay, 61.

Donna’s husband Wayne Ahenakew and son, Cody Kay, survived.

Gloria Ledoux, Wayne’s older sister, says her brother tried repeatedly save his wife and grandson.

“He went up the steps, he was overcome by smoke and he fell all the way back down the stairs.  He tried again because he thought he heard her calling him,” said Ledoux.

Ledoux said her brother fell again, this time breaking his vertebrae, leaving him lying on the lawn, unable to move.

The family has learned that the fire started in the house’s designated smoking room, which contained a couch and wood.  The family believes that there was a spark that ignited the fire.

“He thought he could contain the fire and put it out himself and it got away on him,” said Ledoux.

Wayne lost all his possessions in the fire, and in the following months has been living with his brother.

“His glasses, his teeth, his hearing aid and he had not even his shoes. All he had on was his pants and socks,” she said.

Almost three months after the incident, Ledoux said the family is still recovering from the devastating event.

“It was over the Christmas holiday and then we had to wait for a few days while they did the positive IDs,” said Ledoux.

The fundraiser Friday night at Prince Albert Friendship Centre will feature a banquet, auction, and live music.  Black Rain, Bannock Country and Constant Reminder will perform Friday night.

For information on tickets, people are asked to contact (306) 930-1212.

There is also a donation site. It has raised almost $3,000 since it was established two months ago.
