Monica Burns’ family remains hopeful as they fight for justice

A group of people gathered at City Hall on Monday afternoon to begin their walk for justice for Monica Burns, a young mother who was murdered outside of Prince Albert in January.

Her memory continues to live on amongst her family and friends, who walked from City Hall to the Court of Queen’s Bench. They planned to spend the night outside of the courthouse awaiting an expected bail decision on Tuesday for the man charged with second-degree murder in connection to her death. A hearing was set for March 27, but will be going ahead Tuesday afternoon.

Sorrow filled the faces of several people in attendance, but the strongest message sent was that they hoped that the man accused of killing her, Todd McKeaveney, 38, would not be let go.

“For him not to get bailed out, for him to stay in there, he … well he deserves it,” said Burns niece, Rachelle Ballantyne, 15.

“Today we ask for justice, today we ask to bring a bit of closure to those that we’ve lost needlessly,” said the walk’s MC Howard Walker. “I look [to the Creator] for direction on how to alleviate the injustices that have been done to the mothers, the grandmothers, [and] the sacred daughters.”

Ballantyne said her aunt was “always happy and putting smiles on people’s faces.”

“Everyone loved her and it’s not fair that she [was] taken away like that,” she said.

Sturgeon Lakes Henry Felix spoke to the crowd ending with a prayer, wishing the family “a piece of peace.”

“I have felt the pain that these people have felt, especially the father, the aunts and the brothers of this young lady,” he said. “I hope we can continue to give our fellow young ladies the same support as we do with Monica.”
