Carlton wrestlers grappling for success

Mar 13, 2015 | 12:44 PM

The Carlton Comprehensive High School wrestling team is getting ready to go to provincials Friday after nine wrestlers qualified for provincials at regionals last weekend in Warman.

Wrestlers Eden McPherson, Robbie Deeks got first place in their weight class, Samantha Paradis got second, Hayleigh Kunard, Josh Guthrie, and Reece Stewart got third, while Scott Gauthier, Marty Burns, and Nick Waditaka got fourth.

Coach Kevin Lavallee is expressing his pride in his team and wants them to continue their growth as wrestlers.

“I always said from the start of the year my goal for the team is to get better. I think we have some serious medal threats, but anything can happen at provincials. It’s a different ball game when you get there, yeah, you earn it but you’re going against some wrestlers you’ve never seen before and if you haven’t seen them before it’s hard to gauge how you’re going to do,” said  Lavallee.

Wrestler Reece Stewart is a Grade 10 student who’s in her rookie year and finished third in her weight class and is looking forward to her first chance at provincials.

“I’m very excited to compete this weekend, I have some tough competition but it’s really just a privilege to go compete and see some of the top wrestlers in Saskatchewan,” said Stewart.

Grade 12 wrestler Eden McPherson hasn’t lost a match this high school season and wants to focus on a few key things to prepare for provincials.

“You want to be very careful of what you eat so you can stay in shape because you are going up against the top competition in the province. I have also been practicing every single day, sometimes twice a day,” McPherson said.

The provincials are held March 13 and 14 at The University of Regina.

St. Mary High School is sending 16 students to provincials.

High school reporter Tyson Stewart is a student at Carlton Comprehensive High School.
