Winter storm warning in Saskatchewan

Feb 14, 2015 | 10:14 AM

Saskatchewan could be in for a Valentine’s Day snowstorm as a high-pressure system moves in from Alberta.

winter storm warning has been issued for a good chunk of western, central and southern Saskatchewan including Saskatoon, Prince Albert, North Battleford, Regina and Moose Jaw.

Environment Canada said most areas can expect 10-15 centimetres – or up to six inches – of snow combined with wind starting Saturday morning.

“The extra wind and the blowing snow could combine to make some rather poor visibility and hazardous travel through the province,” Jim Slipec, meteorologist with Environment Canada, said.

Slipec said those who must absolutely must travel should make sure they have an emergency kit in their car.

The system is still developing around the Grande Prairie, Alberta area and will be a slow-moving storm, so the communities stuck under it will get the most snow.

“High-pressure systems move quite a bit slower than the traditional Alberta clipper. It will snow for a pretty good part of the day once it starts,” Slipec said.
