Beware your luck on Friday the 13th

Feb 13, 2015 | 6:34 AM

Whether you believe in things like crossing a black cat, opening an umbrella indoors or walking under a ladder, there’s no doubt those of us who are superstitious will be circling the calendar.

It’s Friday the 13th.

It’s a day people mainly in the western hemisphere consider to be bad luck. Linked with religion, it’s almost like an ill-fated double whammy. Jesus was crucified on a Friday and the 13th guest at the Last Supper was Judas, the apostle believed to have betrayed Jesus. A successful movie franchise with a machete wielding, hockey-mask wearing maniac helped cement the ominous presence of the day.

In Regina’s east end, residents have mixed feelings about the day.

“Actually I forget about it. I don’t even pay attention to it,” said one senior citizen.

“It’s just like any other day. It’s just numbers.”

“I was born on Friday the 13th,” admitted one woman.

However, that doesn’t make the day any more special, saying it’s just another day for her too. For others, a day that’s supposed to have evil connotations actually draws the exact opposite effect.

“I’ve had job interviews. I found money on the ground once,” explained another woman.

“I went out to, I think I went to 7/11 or something like that, and I had a guy buy me a random drink.”

But while the bulk of people don’t seem to be threatened by the superstitious day, there are still some out there who try and avoid it at all costs.

“I just always have bad luck on Friday the 13th, I guess. I’ve had bad luck since I was little and I always will,” insisted one man.

“One year I got cracked in the head with a soccer ball, another year I took a tumble or two.”

His plan is to more or less barricade himself inside, he said jokingly.

He’s not going to like what the rest of 2015 has in store for him. Feb. 13 is only the first of three Friday the 13ths this year. We also have March 13 and Nov. 13.
