Counsel grounded in northern lodge break-in case

Feb 4, 2015 | 4:34 PM

Weather seems to be a recurring issue for five teens that went missing on a boat trip near Reindeer Lake months ago and were charged with break and enter after their return.

Fog and strong winds forced the four boys and one girl – allegedly between the ages of 13 and 17 – onto an island after they headed out on a moose hunting trip in aluminum boats in November.

The teens, who are all from Southend, were scheduled to appear in Southend Youth Justice Court at the end of January.

However, the Crown prosecutor’s office said the case was adjourned until the end of February because cold weather kept counsel from flying in for the court appearance.

Southend is located more than 450 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert.

While the tale of searchers finding the teens in Arctic Lodge cabins initially seemed to be a happy ending, the owner of those 30 cabins told a different story.

Kelly Littlechilds, the owner of Arctic Lodges, said he arrived to his place days after the teens were found to find doors had been kicked in and things out of place.

Some of the buildings have food in them and are left unlocked for anyone who might be lost, he explained at the time.

In the following weeks, charges were laid for the damage Littlechilds discovered on his property.

The five teenagers are set to head to court on Feb. 26.
