New P.A. Winter Fest show to feature youth

Jan 22, 2015 | 5:46 AM

It’s a variety show with a twist because there’s an age limit on who can enter – entrants must be under the age of 18.

Local musician Donny Parenteau is helping to produce the Prince Albert Winter Festival’s Youth Variety Show, which is something new for the festival.

“We are looking for anybody from singers to dance, to jiggers … anything. If you’re a young aspiring magician, [a] comedian that wants to come on and do something, that’s what I’m looking for. I’m looking for entertainers to do this.”

Parenteau said the main reason he wanted to help with this was because of the youth.

He said there are so many music schools in the area but not a lot of places for youth to perform.

“I think it’s best to start an event where they can come up on a big stage and perform with a band and get up there and do [their] thing in front of a crowd.”

The hope of the variety show is to give these kids a unique experience.

“We’re very fortunate to have a very wonderful MC, Don Mitchell, and I’m grateful. The reason why, as a producer, that I chose Don, was because he was one of the very first MCs to ever bring me on when I was 15 years old at my very first talent show. I’ll never forget that,” Parenteau said.

Mitchell is the host of 900 CKBI’s Region at Noon.

There will be a very special introduction to the show as well, Parenteau will be explaining how to pass down music through generations.

The show will be held on Feb. 18 at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre and times will be announced soon.

Auditions will be held this Jan. 25 at 1 p.m. at the Army and Navy Club on 11th Street West.

To sign up to audition or for more information, call Donny Parenteau’s School of Music at 306-922-2289, email fiddlin@sasktel.net or go to Parenteau’s website

Parenteau said on behalf of the Army and Navy Club they have made a karaoke machine available for those who might need it during auditions.
