RCMP defends releasing sensitive info about murdered mother

Jan 21, 2015 | 7:10 AM

The RCMP is standing by its controversial decision to release a sensitive detail about a young mother found murdered outside of Prince Albert.

Monica Lee Burns, 28, was found dead northwest of the city. In a media release issued on Monday, the RCMP identified Burns as a “sex trade worker.”

paNOW has been lit up with comments from people who feel that information should not have been released for the sake of the family.

The information about Burns’ high-risk lifestyle was released along with a picture and physical description of her.

“All those details will help us in finding out more information for the investigation,” said Mandy Maier with the RCMP.

Maier said that’s it important that people don’t focus on just one detail.

“In releasing that information to the public, we’re hoping it will help jog peoples’ memories, you know details about what she did, where she might have been,” said Maier.

Any information police receive may help bring them closer to finding the person responsible for Burns’s murder.

Police may get some answers soon regarding how Burns may have died.  The autopsy on the body was completed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile those who were close to Burns, continue to express their feelings about her.

Amin Sandi told paNOW that she thought of Monica as a little sister. Sandi mentored Monica, and said Monica was a nice girl, just misled.

Sandi said Monica worked on the streets but she did what she could for her and her daughter.
