Hillary Clinton to speak among 65 Secret Service agents in Saskatoon

Jan 21, 2015 | 11:14 AM

One of the most influential women in U.S. politics will be speaking in Saskatoon Wednesday night.

Hillary Rodham Clinton will be speaking at TCU Place at 7 p.m. Her speech will be part of the Global Perspectives series, which is sponsored by CIBC.

In advance of her appearance, TCU Place security services supervisor Marty Gilley said they’ve been working with RCMP and the U.S. Secret Service for the past week.

“To source out the site, inspect all kinds of potential hazards from bomb threats to smoke bombs that could be put in intakes into our building to make the event go south,” Gilley explained.

“The day of the show, the rest of the Secret Service fly in from other points of the United States of America. A full deployment is approximately 65 agents that will be in the house for the event.”

For the general public, RCMP VIP Services and the Secret Service agents will be taking a visual of everyone attending the event. There will be a coat check available and over bags are not admitted into the theatre.

“Saskatoon has always been a very first class event crowd for these events, I don’t anticipate any problems,” Gilley said, referencing events by former presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Gilley advised guests to show up early with doors opening at 5:45 p.m.

“We anticipate a big lineup with a sold out event, over 2,000 people attending,” he said.

Guests will be able to start filling the seats at 6:30 p.m. and the show will start at 7:05 p.m. Clinton will begin with an approximately 35 minute long speech and then there will be a question-and-answer portion for approximately 40 minutes. The event is expected to end around 8:15 p.m.

Clinton could make history in 2016 as the first woman elected president of the United States. It’s believed she will make her second bid for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination in the coming weeks.

Clinton’s political credentials are impressive. She became the First Lady of the United States when her husband Bill Clinton was elected president in 1992. In 2000, she became the first female senator for New York in 2000. She recently served as Secretary of State during Barack Obama’s first term in office.

Clinton will also be speaking at an event in Winnipeg Wednesday afternoon and will arrive in Saskatoon around 4:30 p.m. After the event she will fly out by 9 p.m. to Vancouver.
