Lindsay Strachan is a former athlete who has translated his passion and knowledge of basketball and football into coaching players and enabling them to reach their full potential.

Strachan was a versatile athlete who played multiple sports, including university-level football.

“I was involved with football, basketball, volleyball and badminton at high school in Melfort. In football I played both ways, I played running back offensively and linebacker defensively, in volleyball I was a setter and a right side, in basketball I played guard, and in badminton I played boys doubles. After high school I went to the University of Saskatchewan and I was lucky enough to be a part of the football program as a wide receiver and a punt/kick returner,” Strachan said.

Strachan’s father coached a lot of sports he participated in and was a big inspiration for him growing, he said.

“I grew up being coached by my dad and he is an amazing person and I was very fortunate to grow up on teams he coached. He was my football coach, my hockey coach, he was my baseball coach, and helped out with basketball as well,” said Strachan.

Strachan has been coaching Senior ‘A’ basketball and senior football at Carlton for eight years. He is the offensive co-ordinator for football and the head coach for basketball.  He said his love for the game is what motivates him to keep coaching.

“As a former athlete it allows you to stay engaged with sports and still have a direct impact in the game. Another reason is when I look back at my high school experience extracurricular sports I value the most, so just to be able to provide that opportunity for kids now and hopefully provide a positive basketball and football experience is very important to me,” Strachan said

Through coaching he has been able to impact a lot of players and get their respect, so Grade 11 wide receiver and guard Cole Lindsay had nothing, but positive remarks about him.

“Strachan is one of the most dedicated coaches I know of. He`s able to devolpe each guy into the player he knows they can be. He expects everyone`s best and shows trust in us and that`s all a young athlete could ask for,” Lindsay said.
