Tisdale calls out healthplex contractor after delays

Jan 17, 2015 | 7:35 AM

The Town of Tisdale is not happy the construction of the North East Healthplex that was supposed to be completed 18 months ago is still not done.

The project to create a building that would be home to several health professionals from different fields under one roof was awarded to DUNMAC General Contracting Ltd. for $5.8 million.

Since the construction, multiple issues have arisen including roof and window leaks, according to Brad Hvidston, Tisdale administrator.

“Some of the work they’ve done wasn’t done properly. We have leaks in the roof, there was leaks around the windows and then of course all of the problems that result of water getting in the building,” Hvidston said.

He said he isn’t 100 per cent sure why the contractor is delayed but he “know[s] they’re having problems with their sub-trades and some of the work that was done initially by those sub-trades and now they have to go in and fix those problems.”

Brad Hvidston said the Town has now declared the contractor in default and it’s going to have to provide the Town a schedule when they will remediate the problems.

“The construction of the Healthplex is about 18 months behind when it was supposed to be done.  And so what we’re trying to accomplish is speeding up that process of the getting the deficiencies corrected,” he said, adding this will force DUNMAC to stick to a schedule.

The Town is “obviously not happy” with the delays and issues in construction, he said, but the project itself and what it’s created, has been a success.

“The project is substantially…completed.  I mean, all the professionals are working in the facility and it’s up and running it’s just there’s these problems with the leaking water and all the remediation that’s going to have to happen to fix that problem that’s been created,” he said.

He said the project has been on budget and it won’t cost the Town any extra money to get the building corrected.

Hvidston anticipates the corrections to the structure will be complete by late March and early April.
