Mintos comeback not aligned in the Stars; lose 4-3 in SO

Jan 17, 2015 | 2:52 PM

The Prince Albert Mintos went into the third period down 2-0 to the Battlefords Stars, the third ranked team in the SMAAAHL, but still managed to get a point out of it.

The Mintos eventually lost 4-3 in a shootout, but had a spirited third period to make a game of it.

The Mintos didn’t score themselves until four minutes into the third period, where Chris Van Os-Shaw finally broke the deadlock with his ninth of the year to cut the Stars’ lead in half. On a rather innocent play as the Mintos were trying to gain possession, Van Os-Shaw threw the puck to the net and it took an awkward deflection and into the back of the net.

Mintos rookie defenceman Jake Hobson tied the game with 6:22 left in the game. Reed Gunville stormed behind to strip Stars defenceman Dawson Bacon of the puck and send it out it front. In went all the way to Hobson who wired it off the cross-bar and in.

The Mintos actually went on to take a 3-2 lead as Adam Hergott then gave the Mintos the go-ahead goal just twenty seconds later, sniping low glove side on Brett Pongracz.

Shortly after the Stars took a timeout and pulled Pongracz for an extra-attacker, forward Jared Hillis tied the game on a scramble in front of the Minto goal with just 1:40 left in the game.

That forced a shootout. After the Mintos went 0-2 on their first two attempts, Stars forward Chad Grambo scored for the Stars, putting his former Mintos squad in a do-or-die situation.
Mintos rookie Riley Sawchuk scored to keep his team alive, but Lesko ended the game with a nice forehand move to elude Mintos goaltender Taylor Unruh.

The Mintos lost forward Brody Madarash to an apparent lower body injury in the third period. Madarash absorbed a knee-first check Troy Gerein early in the third, and Gerein was assessed a minor penalty for kneeing on the play. Madarash didn’t return to the game.

The Mintos will take on the Yorkton Maulers on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre. Check back on paNOW.com by 5 p.m. for a full recap of both Mintos’ weekend games.
