UPDATE: 20 students taken to hospital after buses collide near Kerrobert

A school ski trip to Table Mountain was abruptly cancelled for a group of Kindersley high school students when their chartered buses collided with each other near the town of Kerrobert.

It happened at approximately 7:50 a.m. on Highway 21. RCMP said the buses tried to avoid two semis turning off the highway, but the roadwas was slick from morning frost. 

The first bus managed to stop in time, but the second was unable to – rear-ending the other bus.

RCMP said 20 students and one driver were taken to hospital with minor injuries. Two students were later transferred to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon, while another had to be air-lifted to Saskatoon by STARS.

The grade 8 and 9 students all attend the Kindersley Composite High School.

“Right now all of the students are going to be OK, although some were taken to hospital as a precaution,” said Roxan Foursha with Sun West School Division, adding students were transported back to Kindersley in school buses.

Highway 21 was closed for several hours but has since been reopened.
