16-year-old boys charged in Regina teen’s murder

Jan 14, 2015 | 8:27 AM

Two 16-year-old boys have been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a 16-year-old girl found in a home in north Regina.

Neither boy can be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. They made their first court appearance on Wednesday morning.

The two boys — with ruffled hair, t-shirts and jeans barely looking a day over 14 — stepped before the judge separately. A glass panel divided them. Family members for all sides were in court. One person could be seen crying.

The issue of assigning lawyers is still being decided so neither entered a plea, speaking only to say they will appear in person when they return to court next Wednesday. They remain in custody until then.

Police had been called to a home on the 400 block of Garnet Street North on Monday around 5:45 p.m. for a report of a person who was injured or deceased. The girl was already dead by the time officers arrived.

On Tuesday, police confirmed her death as a homicide, and on Wednesday morning, the Regina Police Service laid the charge against the boys.

The maximum sentence for first-degree murder under the Youth Criminal Justice Act is 10 years with six years, at most, served in custody.  The remainder of the sentence is served under conditional supervision in the community.
