PHOTOS: Pot on stove causes fatal Regina house fire

A woman and a young boy who died after being pulled from a burning house in Regina have been identified as Marilyn Tanner and Alonzo Tanner.

Regina Fire & Protective Services were called to 1945 Winnipeg St. at 1:47 a.m. Someone passing by spotted the fire and pulled the 58-year-old woman and 20-month-old boy out.

Both were taken to hospital and died as a result of their injuries from the fire.

An investigator was to look at the cause. Gerard Kay, deputy fire chief with the Regina Fire and Protective Services, said two elements on the stove in the house were left on. A pot that was on one of those elements melted down, and ignited, starting the fire.

Deputy fire chief Gerard Kay explained how the fire was not easy to handle. He said how pouring water on the flames was almost like pouring gasoline on it. The fire simply got bigger.

Flames reignited later in the morning causing fire crews to return to the scene and again put out the flames.

“The house is going to be a total write off,” Kay said. “The entire roof system has collapsed into the home itself.”

A third person lived at the home, but was not in it at the time of the fire.
