10 women will tackle the trails for cancer

For the 15th year, women from all walks of life are joining together to take part in the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles (PWOS) ride.

During the ride, the 10 snowmobilers will trek about 1,865 road miles through several different communities across Saskatchewan, all while raising money for breast cancer awareness and research.

“We couldn’t do what we do without the communities that we travel through and the support from the citizens in those communities year after year,” said Carol Lueken, president of the PWOS. “It’s the people in this lovely province that donate their hard-earned money.”

Since the ride began, the women have raised just over $2 million towards breast cancer.

“In the past 14 years, it’s $2.1 million that we have raised [for research] and then that’s not counting the equipment money that we have spent in the last two years so it’s $2.1 for research and then we purchased the two work stations for Saskatoon and Regina,” said Lueken.

After the event kicks-off in Nipawin, the journey will begin in Prince Albert on Jan. 30 and they will ride until Feb. 6.

“We will be making our way actually into a stop in Prince Albert and then working our way back up to Hudson Bay and all the way down to Priceville and then over to Saskatoon and then ending up in beautiful Meadow Lake,” said Lueken.

This is the first year the PWOS will be partnering up with the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. Lueken said this partnership will give the public more options when it comes to donating.

“We’re quite excited about partnering with the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency as well as the Canadian Cancer Society,” she said. “People will have a chance to donate where they choose, if they want to donate to equipment or if they want to donate to research.”
