Club pushes to rename Saskatoon arena after Gordie Howe
The plan to rename the Kinsmen Arena to honour Gordie Howe is in motion.
The Kinsmen Club of Saskatoon requested that the city fast-track a name change that would see the aging Kinsmen Arena named the Kinsmen-Gordie Howe Arena ahead of Howe’s next visit to Saskatoon in February. The club also wants the small entrance to the arena called Howe Way.
Howe, who’s been recovering from illness and a stroke in 2014, is coming back to his hometown to headline the Kinsmen Celebrity Sports Dinner with Wayne Gretzky on Feb. 6.
The Kinsmen plan to have a special tribute to Mr. Hockey and they’re pushing to have a special ceremony unveiling the new name for the Kinsmen Arena. While the city’s planning committee approved the name change, final approval won’t happen until city council meets on Jan. 26. In a report, the city said changing the name of the arena along with new signage is unlikely to happen in time for Howe’s visit.
