Inmate was receiving treatment prior to death

Dec 29, 2014 | 11:13 AM

A little more information is being released in connection to the death of 50-year-old inmate Darcy Charles Alexson.

According Correctional Service Canada communications manager Jeff Campbell, Alexson was receiving treatment at Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert when his care team decided he needed to be transferred to a Saskatoon hospital.

It was during this transfer on Christmas Day that Alexson passed away.

Campbell couldn’t confirm what Alexson was being treated for at the Victoria Hospital or how long he had been there prior to being transferred.

He said their investigation is ongoing and the coroner has been notified.  Campbell added they don’t consider this a suspicious death, but rather a result of natural causes.

Alexson was serving a sentence of two years and two months at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary for convicted charges of possession of prohibited/restricted firearms with ammunition, possession of a weapon contrary to prohibition order, driving with more than 80 mg and possession of a schedule two substance in August 2013.
