Local filmmakers excited for premiere

Dec 28, 2014 | 1:24 PM

On Sunday a group of locals is planning to premiere their documentary or rather a mockumentary which they filmed right here in Prince Albert.

Matt Mihilewicz wrote the movie’s script and plays the main character. He is trained as an actor and his brother Joel and Joel’s wife Becky Mihilewicz are both trained in production.

“I wanted to basically make a film and I’m pretty lucky because my father Barry Mihilewicz…owns Big Drum Media so we had access to some of the equipment that we wouldn’t normally,” he said. “I wrote a mockumentary style, so it’s a one camera shoot pretty easy to do and it basically just evolved from there.”

Their low-budget comedy film, A World Beyond Tom Middleton follows the main character, Tom Middleton, on his road to star-status.

“It’s a comedy and it is kind of a satire and so the main character is, if I had to say anything I’d say he’s based on, you know the youth of today,” said Matt.

Matt said the character thinks that he can do anything and become famous.

“It’s kind of my commentary on…all these selfies and (how) the internet is kind of…making the youth a little, I don’t want to say narcissistic but you know kind of in that direction,” said Matt.

Becky Mihilewicz is part of the production team, she said since it was the group’s first film they only spent $200.00 to produce the entire movie, which they paid partially by donation but mostly out of their own pockets.

According to Matt having such a small budget caused them some challenges during production.

“If we had a budget…it (would) have been a lot easier, like we could have rented locations and stuff,” he said. “We basically had to ask for volunteers as far as locations go and actors too; we couldn’t get paid actors so we just grabbed local people and friends and family to basically just be in it.”

The film premiers Sunday at St. Mary High School at 7 p.m. Entry is $5.00 at the north door entrance.

The crew will also be selling movie posters and all the money raised will go towards reimbursing anyone who helped pay for the movie as well as the cost of the theatre and possibly towards funding any future films.

Following Sunday’s movie premiere the group will shift their focus onto what they are producing next.

“We’re working on a second Tom Middleton, that one might not be for a little bit though,” said Matt. The actor is also writing another film which he hopes they will shoot this summer here in Prince Albert. “It is completely different; it’s not a comedy it’s actually going to be a murder flick so it’ll be completely like other end of the spectrum.”
