Former FSIN (Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations) Chief and past NDP Candidate Lawrence Joseph announced his intention to seek the Liberal Party of Canada nomination in Desnethé Missinippi Churchill River in the 2015 Federal Election.

“I ran for the NDP in the last election, not because I was a lifelong partisan supporter of the NDP, but because I believed in Jack Layton,” said Mr. Joseph. “I truly believe that Justin Trudeau best represents the hope for the future. I want to help build for my children and grandchildren.”

“There are too many important issues in the North that this Conservative government has failed to address. We need a leader who can bring people together: First Nations, Metis, and non-aboriginal people for a respectful and meaningful dialogue that will work to address our concerns.  Justin Trudeau is that leader and I want to be at the table to help facilitate that dialogue.”

Mr. Joseph was born on the Big River First Nations, and is fluent in both the English and Cree languages.

Throughout his career he has held several elected positions in the public service sector. He was elected as a Trustee and as Vice-Chairman of the Prince Albert Public School Board of Education. He served two terms as Alderman for Prince Albert, first in 1991 and again in 1995. Together with other City Councillors, he served in turn as Acting Mayor in 1993 when Mayor Gordon Kirkby was elected as a Member of Parliament. In 2006, he was elected Chief of the FSIN after having served nearly a decade as vice Chief.

In the 2011 Federal Election, Mr. Joseph received 44.3% of the vote, losing to the Conservative MP Rob Clarke by less than 800 votes.

“The Conservative’s answer to the First Nations housing crisis is building more jails. That’s not right. We need to invest in our young people and build more education. I’m excited about Justin Trudeau’s leadership. He is listening to us and giving Canadians a chance to help shape our own future,” said Joseph.
