Daring river rescue in Saskatoon

Dec 18, 2014 | 6:25 AM

A 27 year old Saskatoon woman is recovering in hospital after getting caught in the icy South Saskatchewan River on Wednesday night.

Just after 10 p.m. the young woman, distraught and screaming, began banging on vehicles near the 300 block of Second Avenue South when security personnel called police.

Officers caught up to the woman on the riverbank near the Broadway Bridge where she was standing in the freezing water.

As some officers tried to talk the woman through the frightening situation, others were securing themselves with rope, preparing to enter the water.

That strategy was tested when the woman went further into the icy water and was taken downstream.

After two attempts, with the woman struggling against the current and screaming, officers were able to swim to her and pull her to shore.

The woman was brought to hospital and is expected to fully recover.

Police and the Saskatoon Fire department are reminding the general public of the dangers of the river and the hazards of cold water and ice.
