Teens charged in weekend car chase

Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) has laid charges following a car chase in the city.

Late Saturday night police were contacted in relation to a complaint of damage to a school in the 400 Block of 23rd Street East.  

“It came in as a suspected damage to a school. The initial complaint was that someone had phoned in, observed numerous people leaving the school grounds and then entered into a vehicle and then took off,” said Sgt. Brandon Mudry, adding it was only later discovered the school had been broken into.

On the way to the school police spotted the truck when it took off heading north on Sixth Avenue East, driving through red lights at dangerous speeds.

In the suspects’ attempt to flee, the truck crashed into another car. Two people in that car were taken to hospital with minor injuries and have since been released in good condition, according to Mudry.

At the time, one suspect was taken into custody and two others fled on foot. Those two were arrested shortly after at the Victoria Hospital.

“The suspects fled scene and they hailed a cab and took that to the hospital,” he said.  Both were seen by physicians before being taken into custody.

Two 17-year-olds, including the driver, were in court Monday morning. The driver is facing charges of Possession of Stolen Property, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle X 2, two counts of Criminal Negligence Cause bodily Harm, Operate a Motor Vehicle while being Pursued by Police and Break and Enter with Intent.

The other teenager has been charged with offences including Break and Enter, Being an Occupant in a Motor Vehicle Knowing it was Taken without Consent and Breach of Youth Court Orders.

“The third person was released without charges at this time,”Mudry said.

In the past month he said there have been more reports of theft of automobiles and reminds the public to lock their vehicles.

Suspect on the loose after second high-speed chase

Saturday night’s chase isn’t the only one on the books for Prince Albert Police Service over the weekend.

On that morning just after 8, PAPS saw a vehicle without lights on driving in the 300 block of River Street West.  Officers followed the vehicle to First Avenue West and towards 10th Street without signaling.  It eventually made its way onto Central Avenue where it went through a stop sign.

Police continued to follow the vehicle to the 400 block of 10th Street East when they activated emergency lights and sirens.  It was this point the vehicle accelerated in an attempted to flee police.

According to Mudry, the vehicle was moving fast and drove across Sixth Avenue East without stopping and into the Exhibition grounds.  It continued at speeds around 120 km/hr and through cement barricades on the north side of the Dave Steuart Arena.  It finally stopped after hitting a fence.

Occupants fled on foot, where one male was arrested.  Mudry said the other suspect was not located, even with the help of a canine officer. 

He said they have a suspect in mind, but could not release more details at this time.

The incident is still under investigation.
