Raiders, Parkland Ambulance team up for winter gear drive

Dec 15, 2014 | 11:46 AM

For another season, the Prince Albert Raiders and Parkland Ambulance are collecting warm winter gear to help those in need.

Parkland Ambulance is the game night sponsor for the Dec. 27 game against the Saskatoon Blades, and paramedics will be on hand to accept donations of new or used mittens, toques, scarves and other items. They’ll also be accepting blankets, and winter coats.

The Raiders’ Sawyer Lange, Tim Vanstone, and Reid Gardiner helped Parkland launch the annual event on Monday morning.

“Please don’t make it a toque toss night,” Lyle Karasiuk with Parkland Ambulance said. “We don’t want to delay the game in any way, so we’d rather collect it all up at the beginning of the game. And we’re happy to receive anything that we can get.”

The items will be “re-gifted” to others within the community, he added. Parkland Ambulance will be forwarding the items to groups and organizations in Prince Albert.

“There are so many people in our community, whether there’s maybe just a young fellow in the school who forgot his mittens, somebody who’s just a little bit down on their luck and is needing some shelter that can use all of this stuff.”

And for those who can’t attend the Dec. 27 game at the Art Hauser Centre, they can still drop off their donations at one of the two Parkland Ambulance locations in the city in advance of the game or at any time throughout the holiday season.

In 2013, more than 500 items were donated.
