Lower gas prices could hang around Sask.

Dec 8, 2014 | 11:14 AM

Drivers in Saskatchewan should be able to enjoy lower prices at the pumps for some time yet.

Prices continue to fall at most stations in Saskatchewan, with two stations in Kamsack listed at 87.9 cents per litre Monday morning – the lowest price listed in the province.

“You compare the prices we had this summer, the average motorists are saving up to $25 per week,” said Dam McTeague, senior petroleum analyst with GasBuddy.com.

It’s been some time since drivers in Saskatchewan have enjoyed prices this low.

McTeague pointed out that some places in Alberta have seen prices as low as 83 cents per litre. He can’t say whether Saskatchewan will see the same, but he expects the low prices to last until March or April.

“It’s not likely unless oil drops to $50 a barrel in which case all of us should be concerned,” McTeague said, highlighting that jobs and producers would be hurt, as well as local, provincial and national economies.

As of Monday morning, the price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil was below $64 per barrel.

McTeague said the last time crude oil was that low, Saskatchewan drivers were paying about the same as they are now for gas. However, the Canadian Dollar was much better at that time.

“What’s really happened here is we buy all of our commodities in U.S. terms and the weakness of the Canadian Dollar has meant we don’t get the full benefit of those prices,” McTeague said.
