Carlton girls’ basketball player builds on success

Dec 5, 2014 | 6:06 AM

With the Carlton Comprehensive High School senior A girls moving up from 4a to 5a basketball, they need players to keep improving and playing well like Grade 11 post Aadyn Oleksyn.

Oleksyn’s sister and brother played basketball for Carlton, and her brother Derek won athlete of the year in his Grade 11 and 12 years.

“My siblings have always played basketball and from watching them play, it made me want to get involved with the sport,” she said.

The Carlton senior A girls basketball team has a lot of returning players this year which excites coach Jennifer Ferguson.

“Our goal this year is to continue to improve and build on our success from last year where we had a really good start and an even better finish. We are playing in a new category at a provincial level this year, so we have left 4a and have moved up to 5a to play more Saskatoon and Regina teams, so I think the goal that we have set for ourselves is this year is to make Hoopla, which is provincials,” Ferguson said.

Oleksyn has been playing on the Senior A girls basketball team since she was in Grade 9, where she won rookie of the year. She wants to keep building on her success this year in her Grade 11 year.

“My goals heading into this season are to improve overall as a player and to gain more confidence on the court,” Oleksyn said.

Due to the hard work and effort she puts into basketball, her coach has nothing but good things to say about her.

“Aadyn is the type of athlete that every coach wants to have on their team, not only is she always a 100 per cent at practice. She encourages her teammates, and she’s pushes herself and strives to make herself better each and every day. She is also versatile and can play multiple positions and she accepts all the challenges that you give her as a coach and wants to be successful,” Ferguson said.

Their first tournament is the weekend of Dec. 5 and 6.
