Sturgeon Lake coach proud of boys’ silver win

Dec 3, 2014 | 11:15 AM

It was a big win over the weekend for the boys of Sturgeon Lake Central School — the team took home silver at provincials in Bellevue.

But it seems no one is more proud or impressed with their performance than the volleyball coach of 20 years at the school, Gilbert Longjohn.

Longjohn said making it to the provincials was a very humbling experience.

“This is our second year we advanced to provincials, and last year we didn’t do very good, we finished fifth,” said Longjohn. “This year, we finished second, and just being at provincial was just so awesome.”

And Longjohn said for the boys, they couldn’t believe they had made it so far.

“They were so excited,” said Longjohn. “I don’t even know how to describe it, just being there it’s so awesome.”

Despite coming in second, Longjohn said he was still so happy with the boys’ game.

“I told the boys no matter what happens, we’re in the finals and it’s so awesome to be there.”

And it’s not just provincials that the team has done well with, Longjohn said in individual tournaments they’ve really turned things around.

“This year too we won at Carlton, we won St. Mary, we won Nipawin tournaments,” said Longjohn. “We all finished first in those ones.”

During the final game the team came in two sets to one against Waldheim.
