Frozen line cause of $77 M Regina refinery explosion

Dec 3, 2014 | 2:17 PM

The cause of a Christmas Eve explosion at the Co-op Refinery Complex has been identified by fire investigators who estimate the cost of the blast’s damage to be $77 million.

A bypass line of the Polymerization Unit 27 froze after a procedure was done to maintain it. Stress caused to the line by the freezing caused it to rupture so that when the air temperature warmed, the petroleum product was released through the line, which resulted in an explosion and fire.

No one was hurt, but there was damage to buildings and equipment when the blast happened at about 3:30 p.m. that day. The fire was handled by the fire crews of the Co-op Refinery Complex, which contained the blaze to a central part of the plant.
