Kinsmen water slides receive $25K grant

The water slides at Kinsmen Water Park are $25,000 closer to being repaired after they received grant funding from the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF).

Prince Albert’s water slides were closed for the season due to safety concerns. The City needs $260,000 in total to repair the water slides, and it has committed $100,000 to their repair. The grant funding means that the contribution from outside sources to the project is $60,000.

The City has applied for other grants and presented sponsorship proposals and it continues to wait for a response to those, community services director Jody Boulet said on Tuesday.

“We’re hoping to have a couple more announcements, potentially before Christmas. We have been working on the project now for quite some time as far as the fundraising end of it.”

Prince Albert has applied for provincial and federal grants, and it has also submitted proposals to different corporations, non-profit organizations, and service clubs.

The CIF is a fund created through the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation Act and is run by the ministry of tourism, parks, culture and sport. The water slides received the maximum amount available.

With this new grant money in hand, the City only needs to raise an additional $100,000 more.

Earlier this year, the water slides received $25,000 from the TSN/Kraft Celebration tour for making it to the final round. The City also received a $10,000 contribution from its natural gas supplier, Twin Eagle Resources.

Boulet said every step they’re taking is in the right direction with all of the announcements the City is making about funding for the water slides’ repair project. He said he thinks he will be more comfortable once they’ve reached the end fundraising target.

“Hopefully that’s sooner rather than later so that we can plan the project and get the most benefit of the facility for the 2015 season. So, as each of these announcements come out, it does make us more and more confident about reaching that end goal, and it was another step in the right direction for that project,” he said.

The City will be issuing a request for proposals to get an updated cost for the repairs. Boulet added that the department wants to make sure it has the most up-to-date options for city council.
