Icehawks comeback falls short to Thunder

Nov 22, 2014 | 9:28 PM

The Prince Albert Icehawks spotted the Ochapowace Thunder a quick 3-0 lead in the first 12 minutes of Saturday’s game, and could never recover.

The Icehawks dropped the game 5-4 to the Thunder despite having home ice advantage at the Kinsmen Arena. The Icehawks have now won just once in their last five games.

The Thunder strolled into the rink with just 11 skaters, which actually worked out to be an advantage as the Icehawks figured an easy night was ahead.

“The boys saw they were a little short-staffed there and took them a little lightly,” said Icehawks head coach Kim Dryka. “It showed in the first period. That’s the difference in the hockey game.

“The first period killed us.”

Thunder point machine Mathew Cameron had three points on the first four Thunder goals, scoring two of them and getting an assist.

After Bohdi Elias made it 1-0 early, Cameron scored twice to give the Thunder a 3-0 lead just 12 minutes into the game.

Shane Regier got the Icehawks on the board in the second, shortly before Cameron found Darcy Kayseas alone in front to restore the Thunder’s three-goal lead.

Icehawks defenceman Brendan Boruch would give his team some life, scoring late in the second to make it a 4-2 game heading into the third.

Dennis Peepeetch made it 5-2 for the Thunder, but Ryley Regnier and Darian Clarke both scored in the last minute to make it a 5-4 game. The Icehawks outshot the Thunder 50-36 in the game and were buzzing late, but the spirited comeback effort fell a bit short.

The Icehawks will be back at it on Sunday to take on the Delisle Chiefs at 2:30 p.m. at the Kinsmen.

“We just have to forget about the first period, take the next 40 minutes of momentum into the game tomorrow and be ready for the game,” said Dryka.
