VIDEO: Kerry Joseph ready for chapter after Riders

Kerry Joseph didn’t get the fairy-tale ending he was looking for by returning to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Now, the soon-to-be retired quarterback is ready for the next chapter in his story.

Joseph’s looking forward to giving back to the game that gave him so much.

“I know I’m going to take some time when I get home and sit down with my wife and talk to her about it. I just look at it as this game has been good to me,” said Joseph.

“I’ve been around some great players in the locker rooms and I feel I have so much more to give back to the game.”

At 41 years old, Joseph doesn’t see himself as a mentor in uniform anymore. It’s time for him to mentor and teach the next generation of football players as a coach.

Where Joseph will coach and in what capacity remains up in the air. However, Joseph did suggest there was a pretty good chance he would be working in the United States.

“With my wife being from New Orleans and having a lot of relationships down south (with) a lot of friends that are coaching. I’m going to exhaust all of my options,” he said.

That doesn’t mean that Joseph will never return to the CFL as a coach. It’s a move Joseph would be open to if it was in the right situation.

Some hope there might be an opportunity for Joseph here in Saskatchewan. Earlier this week, Darian Durant suggested that he would prefer to have a separate quarterback coach from the offensive coordinator, unlike this past season where George Cortez handled both duties.

“(Durant) has thrown some hints of at me. If I have the opportunity and the opportunity was right to work with (Durant), I wouldn’t hesitate,” said Joseph.

Of course, Joseph knows that’s a decision that is currently out of his hands.

Joseph’s final game in Green and White definitely did not go as planned as Joseph tossed five interceptions in that game. It’s an experience he plans to learn from to use as a coach one day, just perhaps not with the visual evidence.

“I don’t know if I would show them that game film. I don’t even want to watch it,” joked Joseph.

Joseph’s last game in the CFL might not have gone as planned but he feels the last couple of months were more than he ever could have asked for the final chapter of his career on the field.

“I wanted to retire as a Rider. My plan was to sign a one-day deal. It worked out even better. I had a chance to come back and actually play,” said Joseph.

“I got more than I even asked for, and I’m good with that. The fans, this community has been great to me. I just can’t see any other way of finishing this book.”
