Pense-area man charged in hit and run that injured Mountie

Nov 19, 2014 | 4:20 PM

A man from Pense is facing charges, accused of fleeing the scene after an RCMP officer was hit by a vehicle.

Blake Wahl was arrested at his Pense-area home on Tuesday morning. The 30-year-old man is charged with one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

The charges come from a hit and run on Oct. 19. Early that Sunday morning, RCMP officers were arresting a man west of Regina while using a unmarked police vehicle. That’s when an SUV driving southbound on the road headed straight towards the officers. A 42-year-old constable tried to pull the arrested 56-year-old Regina man out of the way but they were both hit.

Mounties say Wahl is not the owner of the SUV  involved in the collision, and that it wasn’t stolen. The vehicle was seized on Wahl’s property in the Pense area.

Meanwhile, the officer hit in the collision remains in the hospital. The RCMP released this update on Cst. Keith Bennett:

“Cst. Bennett continues to recover in hospital from the injuries he sustained as the result of the hit and run. While he has come a long way in the month since the incident, he has a long road to a full recovery. His recovery has been made possible by the excellent care he has and continues to receive in hospital as well as the support from his wife and family, the RCMP, friends and the public both near and far who have sent words of encouragement and support. His spirits are high and he looks forward to the time when he can return home to his family and return to the job he loves.”
