Redhead Equipment buys Moker & Thompson

Nov 17, 2014 | 1:02 PM

One of Saskatchewan’s largest equipment dealers has just acquired a Prince Albert-based business.

Redhead Equipment made the announcement today that they’ll take over Moker & Thompson Implements’ Prince Albert and Melfort locations.

Redhead Equipment now has locations in Estevan, Lloydminster, Melfort, Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Regina and Swift Current.

Gord Thompson, now Ag Sales Manager for Redhead in the city, said Moker & Thompson as a company wanted to grow and possibly be acquired by a larger company. That’s something he said their manufacturers were looking for.

“Redhead is our neighbourhood dealer and we share the same lines – although they are complimentary – that they have construction equipment and trucking equipment. They have a lot of depth in their organization, we were leaner being a smaller company.”

He said Redhead Equipment has sophisticated computer systems and are a great company to work with because, like Moker & Thompson, Redhead is community oriented.

“We like the people, culture was a big thing for us and we like their organization.”

The move will allow the company to offer more items and products for their customers, which will include a new building in the future and more job opportunities as they will need more employees.

“Redhead is ultimately going to put in a new building here because in order to offer the construction and trucking lines they need more space then we have to offer. It will mean more employees and a whole bunch of things … we’ll have more parts, better service department, lots of things the customer will appreciate.”

They will remain based in Prince Albert along with the location in Melfort.

“Everyone was offered a job and everyone stayed.”

One thing Moker & Thompson started in Prince Albert is “The Field of the Future” which grows a crop with the proceeds going to a local organization.

Thompson said Redhead Equipment has a similar at another of their locations and believes they will continue this into the future.

He said he’s been asked a lot about what the acquisition will mean for their customers.

“My answer is I’ll still be here, the same sales guys will be here, the same parts and service people will be here. I think it will be very transparent for our customers, they are going to be dealing with the same people in the same manner. It’s just that we’re going to have the opportunity over time to be able to offer them other lines.”

Another benefit with Redhead Equipment taking over is their marketing department will go from a single person to a department which will allow them to do much more.

“I’m quite excited about it, our people are excited about it, and it’s going to be good.”

Gary Redhead, president and CEO of Redhead Equipment, said in a news release that the new staff and locations are a welcome addition:

“Moker & Thompson was a top-notch dealership, with a dedicated and experienced team and an equally loyal customer-base. By adding their regional agricultural expertise to our existing footprint, we’ve enhanced our industry presence and expanded our service capability to our customers across the province.”

Redhead Equipment has been in Saskatchewan for over 65 years.
