Santa’s sleigh rides into Saskatoon for annual parade

Nov 16, 2014 | 11:19 AM

Santa Claus is back in the bridge city Sunday for his annual parade.

The Santa Claus Parade begins at 1 p.m. at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 19th Street East and will wind its way down 3rd Avenue and back up 1st Avenue to Midtown Plaza.

“Our theme this year is Christmas around the world and it starts with the grand marshal which is FolkFest,” parade spokesman Jerry Demeria said.

This year’s parade features around 50 floats and displays. Participants include politicians, the Saskatoon Valkyries, Walter Murray High School, Saskatoon Fire Department and car clubs.

Demeria said this is one of the largest parades, but organizers don’t want to make it too long because of the cold weather.

Cold weather also prevents marching bands from taking part in the parade and can affect families who come to watch.

“You’re standing out there for 45 or 50 minutes. Just be prepared and dress for success,” Demeria said.

Sunday’s forecast shows a mix of sun and cloud with a chance of light snow and a high of -8 C.
